Something really fucked just happened:

So, i closed firefox and left the comp running whilst i attended to something else for 5 minutes or so, i came back and double clicked firefox (to launch it).

Instead of the usual launching of firefox, i get some small screen about profiles, i try using the profile called 'Default', but it said that it was already in use, even though i had nothing else running. So i created a new one, and clicked ok, now i have firefox without any of my bookmarks, extensions, plugins etc.

Help?

Looks like your profiles folder got fucked by something.

well i think what i should've done before making a new profile was check in processes and end any firefox one.. But not thinking i created a new profile.

So basically i'm asking how to change profiles.

Your firefox didn't close properly. You get that profiles screen when you try to launch a second instance. Hit ctrl alt del and make sure no firefox.exe process is running. Then relaunch it and it should work as normal.

EDIT: ok, I didn't read all the posts

just go here

C:\Documents and Settings\yourwindowsusername\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

and delete the new profile you created

Find and delete your profile's lock. Mine is here:
C:\Documents and Settings\1450220\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\bfiep062.default\parent.lock

Restart firefox.

Hey did you try the quick and easy first?

Close the Profile dialog box
Go to taks Manager
Sort by name
End all firefox processes
Re-launch firefox.

Sometimes firefox locks up and does not exd the process, it just lingers in the background locking up your profile, closing this or re-booting will usually fix the problem.

Speaking of FireFox, I'm starting to get a little pissed about its performance.

First, after installing Firefox it runs fine and I don't have any problems. But after using it for just a week or two, it starts taking longer and longer to launch. Firefox at home and at work take about 15 seconds just to load up. 15 seconds doesn't seem like a long time, but for just an internet browser to take that long is a little ridiculous.

Secondly, either Firefox has a memory leak, or it is a massive resource hog. If I leave it running on a machine for a while without touching it, I can expect to come back to have it sucking up tons of my memory. I left it running at home the other morning before I left for work. When I came home, it was using just under a full gig of memory. A GIG. Sure it had several tabs open, but nothing requires that much memory for web page viewing.

WTF? Firefox used to be fast. :icon27:

yeah I noticed that too, it starts to eat up a buttload of memory the longer it's online..

Yeah I think 1.5 has problems, I've seen it eat a lot of memory.

Try disabling auto-update. One of your plugins probably moved the server that services auto-update requests. You end up waiting until a timeout happens before firefox is useful. If that works, disable them one-by-one (or binary search) to find which plugin is the culprit.

No it's definately the browser itself and/or a mix of it's features. A ton of people usually complain about memory "holes" and whatnot over at mozillazine, check this: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=354828

I wasn't talking about the memory leaks, just the load time.

Load time is usually contributed to an offending extension or two, which the best way of figuring out is to launch ff and disable a few extensions and see if it's still slow to load. If it goes fast again you can re-enable things again.

But firefox does jump to like 200mb+ usage in task manager sometimes, which is kind of odd considering other browsers don't do this. I've mostly seen memory use jump really high if I view a bunch of fullscreen pictures.

Gotcha, I'll see if one of my plugins/extensions is causing the slow load times.

FF has had the unaddressed leak issue for quite some time now. i was hoping 1.5 would have solved some of the bloat, but in fact, it's worse now. i had two tabs open for <2 hours the other day and it was using around 250MB. no excuse for that.

oh, and don't blame extensions because i only have adblock.
