Crouch Slide Issues

(not my computer.. I'M the one with the issue)..

I can crouch slide, no problem.. but I've seen guys changing direction like ping pong balls around corners using this technique.. and I'm doing something wrong.

I seem to lose the speed when I come OUT of the crouch.

So you strafe, as normal, get some speed, hit crouch before you hit ground... and then how to change direction ? I seem to be "on ice" when I come out of the crouch, and can't accurately change direction..

What am I doing wrong, here?

Pretty sure the trick is to start your slide without pressing in a direction, and to really alter your direction strafe and turn your mouse in the direction you wish to go.

+closer you duck to floor, the larger the slide

+remember that sliding loses your speed fast.. so if your trying to keep speed then the slide should only last an instance in which you change direction without losing speed. I see many people sliding for more than is neccessary then failing jumps because they lost all the speed in their slide.

+holding down only left or right before pressing duck can help movement. (back it up with mouse movement of course)

I read some contradicting things about it on ESR from the people that can do the crouchslide jump to YA on Over the Edge. Some say you need to let go of forward when sliding and making the turn, others say you don't. It appears you have 2 seconds to slide from the moment you press the crouch key (i read on OPC).

hrhr just to confuse things further :icon32:

- I was under the impression it calculated the length/time of slide based on the length of time you're in the air prior to pressing the crouch button - so jumping and pressing it immediately on take off would produce a short slide, whereas waiting until the last millisecond before hitting the floor to press crouch would result in an optimum slide. 2 seconds is the maximum slide time, so being airbourne any longer than this before crouching does not improve slide distance

of course i read this somewhere, memory escapes me - so source is dubious, but it seems to work for me ? :)

changing direction - lol i have no idea, I always seem to fudge it and lose some speed, although i will try some of the suggestions above to see if that helps.

Load up dm8 or whichever one is the dm17 remake test it with falling you slide for a good while, actually rose might be good to test on with all the different hights.

Edit: The code is in physics_player.cpp in the SDK, along with a bunch of water code, and a shout out to nick maggoire... :icon28:

So yeah, I dont know if anyone else has been practicing this stuff or anything but it seems to me the trick is like I said.

Also you can get around corners and jump out of the slide maintaining your speed so you could actually build up speed since I believe you can strafe jump out of the crouch.

I seem to get pretty good speed jumping back OUT of the crouch, yeah..
