Quake 3 Arena freezing on grey screen

Hi everyone,

I've been playing Quake 3 Arena for a while now, with no problem, but the other day I tried to start it up. It got to the grey screen, and froze. It didn't load any further.

It always used to work, so I tried reinstalling it and the same thing happened. Then, I copied all of the files to an external hard drive and tried running it from another PC, and it worked fine. So, there must be something wrong with something else on my PC somewhere causing it to freeze.

Does anyone have any idea what? I'm on Windows XP Home, and I have disabled some services recently, to speed up my computer. Do you reckon it could be that, or something else. What does Quake 3 Arena need on your computer to run?

Thanks a lot.

Have you tried updating your video drivers?

What version do you have, and have you tried leaving it at the gray screen for 5 mins?

There was a version of Quake which would hang for *long* time when loading the game, if it couldn't connect to the master server at that point.

Could be your firewall needing input on allowing/denying internet access to quake3.exe

Try alt+enter to minimize the game, and press ~ to gain mouse movement. Check any user-prompt popups from there.

I tried the alt+enter thing, and it didn't work.

In fact, I noticed this time, when I press ctrl+alt+del, the programme is marked as "not responding"...

Graphics drivers are fine... I'm a little bit stuck.

Did you upgrade quake 3 to patch 1.32?

I hadn't, but I've now tried upgrading... still with no difference. The fault must be something wrong with my computer, though, rather than the install, since, as I've said, I can play it on another PC.

I have no idea what the problem is though. It always used to play... maybe it is something to do with my interent connection, although I have no idea how to solve that. I tried turning my firewall off, but that made no difference.

when this happens, quit q3 and check the qconsole.log in quake3/baseq3. check the end of the file, should have some info as to what's going on. this sounds like your not connecting to the master server or ports aren't forwarded properly in your router/firewall config.

I don't have a file called qconsole.log... not sure what's going on there...
