So my dad asked me about VoIP, which I know nothing about, doing a bit of googling and looking up stuff on wikipedia I have the basics, but does or has anyone used Skype? Its apparently a free service, or so it says on their site.

So is it something worth checking out?

Skype is free unless you call a phone, i've been using it a while and it's pretty decent.

Is it full of ads, spyware, any of that kind of stuff?

If you're in the UK; http://www.voipcheap.co.uk/

Register, buy £5 of credit, and call landlines in the UK, US and a heap of other countries for free.

Also you can get your own phone number which other people can call with it.

Works great for me.

You could always buy a Cisco VoIP phone and not pay any phone bills, but the phones aren't cheap. They start at $500, so it is for buisnesses.
