fastest drivers for geforce fx 5200?

Just got my hands on a geforce fx 5200, but surprisingly, it seems to dip to lower framerates than my old geforce 2 ultra in quake3

In high resolution with hq settings, the new card is definitely more powerful, and even in low res, it goes up to 200+ framerates, but it also dips to 80fps in large arenas, whereas i don't think my geforce2 ultra did that.

I'm using the latest nvidia drivers from their website, but back in the days when i was an avid tweak monkey, there were always faster drivers around (i.e. detonator, etc.)

is there any such solution for the fx 5200?

Check you haven't got crazy AA + AF settings turned on in the control panel.

yea no it's all tweaked out for max performance.

just overclocked it - will test it out on a full server later on tonight

wanna duel tonight?

Did you get rid of the old drivers first? Try driver cleaner pro, and while there, use the cab cleaner as well. If you didn't format before the switch, I bet there is some old residue driver stuff still on your system. That tends to cause slowdowns.

yea i know the fx 5200 ain't a super fast card, but a friend gave it to me for free.

better than my tnt2 vanta 16 meg which was what i was using before (since my geforce2 ultra fried)

just overclock it to 286mhz core, 463mhz memory, that's what i did, and i did see a significant speed increase.

i do not have the card anymore however,

tried the driver cleaner - didn't make a diff

it's funny - i can have 125 fps, and then as soon as i look at my teammates, it drops to 80-90 fps. Seems like rendering player models eats up the card...

of course, the card has more shit of a fill rate than the voodoo3 and the geforce2 gts greatly surpasses the fx5200 in terms of performance by 2x

interesting...

it's funny though - my geforce2 ultra would never be able to peak at 200+ fps even in low res, but the 5200 does.

also the 5200 is much faster in high quality settings

but the 5200 dips drastically when there are player models in the arena within the visual field, whereas the ultra didn't, from what i can remember.

wow want an xp1700 and 256mb of ddr for free too? i have no use for it...you'll have to find a motherboard though.

ah u guys are too kind :) i'll stick to the p3 for now though - but seriously that's good of u to offer

i'm planning to upgrade eventually - (been saying that for a few years hehe).

another thing - i am running in 640 res vertex lighting, and this problem exists even if i use 16 bit colours or textures.

have set all display settings in display properties for max performance.

I've done benchmarks on a high-end system with both the fx5200 and gf2gts, though i only tested 3dmark01.

FX5200 = 4300 3dmarks
GF2 GTS = 8500 3dmarks

sorry, forgot the exact last two digit numbers.

The fx5200 in a p3 1ghz will be fine, as no other card will perform faster than it with that horrible processor bottleneck. Yes, not even a Radeon 9800 will save you.

crazy - but it still doesn't necessarily explain my particular issue. My geforce2 ultra was more consistently at 125 fps (unless the map was large or tonnes of action) - but the 5200 dips to 80-90 as soon as even 2 player models are close up in my visual field (but it's way faster than gf2ultra in other circumstances)

The Detonator 77.77 drivers are the fastest for my GeForce FX 5200..I don't use that video card anymore but those drivers were the fastest when I ran my q4 benchmark.
