There are 9 little squares in the corner of my screen

When I play some videos, there are 9 little squares in the top right corner of the screen. Is this caused by some codec? If it is, how can I remove it?

It was caused by a trial version of the Elecard codec, which I consequently "bought" to correct the issue.
