Just out of curiosity, what happens when you open your quake 4 directory via dos and run quake 4 from the command prompt? If it still fails, you may have to reinstall--if it's not copying the game dll out of the pak files correctly, something may have gotten corrupted, and a reinstall will probably fix it.

i'm running the latest 1.0.5b2 patch, and it also happened on the 1.0.5b patch. Started happening today, odd

- Is your q4base directory read-only?
- Does the quake4 executable run with different credentials?

BTW, what's the memory message?

They're the same as mine. Your problem seems to lie with the dlls. I backuped the 1.0.5.0 quake4.exe and q4ded.exe when installing the first dualcore/hyperthreading patch and put those files back when i noticed that you can't join your own dedicated server with that version. I didn't install the latest patch either (i don't have a dual-core cpu anyway). You can dl and try my executables if you want.

NULL pointer reference. Hard to tell for sure without hooking things up to a debugger, but it usually indicates a programming error.
