I got into an arguement with someone telling me that playing games are a waste of time, and that game developing is a waste, and that I should play the drums like he does. Then he tells me this bullshit statistic that 75% of game devs are fat but he can't remember where he saw it at.

How was that supposed to strengthen his argument?

That game development is a waste of time and that it's meaningless and will never get people any where.

I'd say Gabe Newell probably pushes the average up A LOT. Oh and drummer? :olo: Maybe he's related to drum :icon31:

What a moronic argument, "games are useless because a statistic (of which I don't remember where I read it) says 75% of game developers are overweight".
Is it more useful to play drums in a - say - rockband?

According to him that all game devs will never be remembered and that rockers are better in every way.

I would say that 75% of people in general are fat.

Hardly. I'd say we have 1 overweight person for every 50 or so here.

Game development sure hasn't been a waste for me.

And that 75% figure is total malarky. Most game devs look like normal people.

Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism that condemns existence. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalties, and no purpose other than, perhaps, an impulse to destroy. While few philosophers would claim to be nihilists, nihilism is most often associated with Friedrich Nietzsche who argued that its corrosive effects would eventually destroy all moral, religious, and metaphysical convictions and precipitate the greatest crisis in human history. In the 20th century, nihilistic themes--epistemological failure, value destruction, and cosmic purposelessness--have preoccupied artists, social critics, and philosophers. Mid-century, for example, the existentialists helped popularize tenets of nihilism in their attempts to blunt its destructive potential. By the end of the century, existential despair as a response to nihilism gave way to an attitude of indifference, often associated with antifoundationalism.

To enter into a debate on the ultimate pointless of something, you'll most likely come up against the ultimate pointlessness of everything.

The above may be of use to you. In my experience the argument can come back around to the value placed on suffering/pleasure throughout the course of a person's life. On that basis, I think the arguments for gaming/game development are equivalent to those for music/drumming.
