I play q3 arena, 1.30. Is there a standard program people use for real time chatting when playing?

I thought it would add quite a lot to the game if you could talk to team members whilst playing?

I guess you mean actually talking, as opposed to typing.

Don't know much in this area, but a lot of servers use Teamspeak: http://www.goteamspeak.com/
There's also Ventrillo: http://www.ventrilo.com/ though i'm not sure if that's used for q3 and other games, as i don't use it.

Yep, TS is probably most used. Some people even use Skype but that takes quite a lot of bandwidth. It's major advantage is that it has much less delay/lag.

TS's sound quality used to be quite shitty compared to ventrilo, i dont know how it is with the current TS version. I personally stick with Ventrilo. Small, easy and good quality.
