Sony has been anything but talkative these past few months regarding their plans for PlayStation 3. No one except Sony seemed to anticipate they'd continue to meet their projected spring release date in any territory, even Japan.
Today, Sony officially conceded defeat to the recent flurry of rumors and speculation, with Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun reporting the machine has been pushed back until November.
There aren't many details out right now, but Sony says issues over the finalization of copy protection technology related to their Blu-ray disc drive is the cause of the delay.
As the news is coming out of Japan, that creates a worrisome scenario for America and Europe. There were already rumblings Sony wouldn't be able to launch in all territories before the end of the year, but missing out on the Christmas season over here could prove a deadly blow to Sony's next-generation plans.
Somewhere in Microsoft's offices, Bill Gates just opened a bottle of champagne. With more details expected at tomorrow's PlayStation conference and the Game Developers Conference just around the corner, it appears the flood gates (for good or ill) are about to be unleashed.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has gone on record for the first time to openly acknowledge the certain delay of the launch of its PlayStation 3 next-generation videogames console and media player, pathing the way for what will be certain disappointment for gamers in any region hoping to purchase the mythical monster within the next half year.

Uh, the console is delayed until November in Japan. That does not mean it will not launch in the US until 2007. It is possible, if unlikely, that Sony wants to attempt a simultaneous launch this time around.
Either way, the title of this thread is bullshit.

It's now official and they've now put a date on it. How is this not new?
No console in teh last 2 generations has had a simultaneous Japanese, European and American launch.

Didn't the X-Box?
And as a matter of semantics, they didn't actually say the console wasn't coming out in 2006 in the States. They may have implied it, though.

The 360 launched in all 3 locations at the same time and suffered a lot for it. Sony wont make that mistake i'm sure.

March 14, 2006 - Ken Kutaragi, PlayStation Master and keeper of big news has announced at the PS meeting today that the PlayStation 3 will be launching in early November worldwide for the North American, Asian, and European territories.
Once released, Sony will unleash one million units per month with a total of six million units in 2006 alone. Production numbers are higher for PS1 and PS2 in their initial years.
so much for the thread title

and odiums hypothesis.

Hey, for once, give it some slack. Yeah they are shit, but its about the developer, not just the console power. I mean there WAS some games on PS2 that looked better than some shite gameso n xbox, thats a given. In this day and age, you cant just make a 400 poly model, giver it a texture and call it done, its slightly more involving. I know, i'm working on OVerDose, a full per pixel game, and thats hard work i can tell you...

Hey if they want to try worldwide, let them. Problem is, this is Sony, and given the past record with faulty units at launch, i'm, willing to bet that this is going to be either the biggest amazing launch ever or the biggest joke launch ever. We already know the PS3 and 360 games will look exactly the same, so who the hell is gonna fork out £200+ extra for a system, if they are gonan be faulty at launch?

cause it has a 60gb hd standard and compatible with linux for all the nerds?

and because this one actually does have full backwards compatibility (which will be upscaled to hidef much like the 360 does. compare halo2 on xbox with halo2 in 360.. quite the difference sir).
but indeed, the price will most likely suck purely because it says "sony" on the case.

The PS3 wont ship with a HDD, hey are planning one but its a seperate release. Thats what I heard anyway, but we shall see. If it does ship with a HDD then the price tag just went up even more
As for full backwards compatible titles, yeah thats all well and good. Your paying for that though mind. Like the PS2, it shipped with the actual PSOne chip inside it so that it could play PSOne games, and I'm sure they took the same way out this time some how. Its not emulated, its run proper. Thats one area M$ is fucking up in badly, they wont allow many more games onto the list, because THEY want control over it. Why not just let the developer make the damn patch, so that THEY can fix their OWN games...
Anyways, we shall see soon. Today soon in fact, a lot of new details are coming out. I expect to see 5 or 6 games, all looking good but not amazing, showing of the PS3 to be a 360 beater. One of them being the under detailed for this gen MGS4.

im reading the whole ps3.ign.com realtime atm and when i posted that they said sony confirmed a 60gb hdd out of the box. now they edited the article though, saying they misinterpreted. games will be made with a hdd in mind, but its still unclear if its out of the box.
Earlier, we mistakenly reported that Sony would including the hard disk with the PS3 right out of the box. Kutaragi actually stopped short of confirming this, leaving it as an area of speculation for now. He did state that Sony hopes to avoid a situation where some systems have the drive and others don't (Kutaragi didn't mention Xbox 360, but he was probably thinking it).
the keynote doesnt touch any games though. its purely hardwaretalk. although they do mention their Live equivalent

Just FYI, future xbox 360 games will need the HDD as well

Dev teams pretty much said a warm "fuck off" to M$ and started to use the HDD so they could get bigger enviroments.
TBH that was the biggest mistake, saying to people "dont use the HDD". Why? Everybody has one really its total obviously that the Core system hasn't sold well at all, and everybody who has a core system went out and bought a HDD anyways if they could find one...
I haven't been to ign today, just got up
EDIT FOR YOUR EDIT: Well Hardware wise they will talk a lot of shit, saying this is better than that etc etc, but when it boils down to it, they are so close that it doesn't matter at all. PS3 can do a few more calculations, but 360 can perform with nicer textures... Thats it. Even them out and you have the same bloody thing anyways. As for Live! on PS3 (SonyWorld or something?), I'm sure it will have every feature the 360's online service has, but renamed, and a few others. Go sony go!

well, now that somebody actually gave a direct answer: cool.
a lot of sony's hype is always smoke and mirrors. theyve never gone out and said "we can do this dn this specifically" and not lived up to it. they have done a lot of tapdancing and "we want to do something like this' though
ofcourse this clip was in a controlled enviroment so the actual game may not be* exactly like that
*isnt

Hey i would of loved for the PS3 to push graphics like killzones video, i think the style rocks. But the problem is, your not gonna get it just yet. "MAYBE" it will be close t othat at the end of the PS3's life. But you have to think about HD as well, and TBH, a game that looks that good wouldn't be able to run in HD smooth, so it wouldn't be released. I cant stand HD myself, i dont see the point. I'm more than happy with my TV not in HD (although im sure ill change my mind once i actually get one)

What I want to know is if the FPS games that will come out in the first year of PS3's life will be compatible with mouse/kb. With 6 USB 2.0 ports on the console, they better fucking be. I can't stand FPS games with a controller!

Its up to the developer. The 360 has 3 USB ports, and while thats not a lot, its more than enough for a mouse and keyboard combo. Some games will support them like Final Fantasy, but Quake shipped with no Mouse and Keyboard support... WHY?

even the 360's dashboard supports keyboard control
playing with mouse and keyboard on a couch doesnt really work that well though. i guess thats the main reason devs dont code it in. the demographic is people sitting in their comfy chair 10 feet away from the tv.

Question for you Odium. How do you think games are developed?
This isn't a flame, your post just has my interest piqued.
