In the menu and ingame, the sound comes about a second late.
Cause? Solution?
Thank you.

upgrade sound card drivers?
run dxdiag in the start run box and see if directx for sound hates you?
delete q3config.cfg in q3 baseq3 directory then boot up quack3 again .. test?

Deleting the cfg file does nothing, and so does changing the acceleration level of sound hardware (in dxdiag), from total acceleration to none.

Play around with s_mixPreStep and s_mixahead, see what works best for you.

Just to be sure, did you do a /snd_restart after altering those cvars?

the sound can lag behind a bit on a slower computer, its only happened to me in flash animations where i check an im ingame... but never in Q3.

I tried the different settings being on the main menu. Executing quake3.exe , and right after the intro videos.
Tried with and without /snd_restart

Some motherboards with nForce 2 chipset (including Soundstorm sound) had the same problem. It can't be solved with Q3 cvars. It's a driver issue. Your mobo doesn't have an nForce 2 chipset but a KT400. It's probably the drivers too though. Try a different (older or newer) version.

Downloaded and installed latest drivers, still the same.
Apparently, it isn't this way only in Quake 3; today I installed "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" and the same issue appeard: both on the main menu and in-game.

Try a using a PCI latency tool. 'Wrong' PCI latency settings can cause sound stuttering. The NGO video drivers include such a tool and say 64 is a good value. You should be able to find more info on this.

I used
PCI Latency Tool 3, increased latency from 32 to 64 and 128, but nothing.
Am I doing it alright? Could it be something else?

directx handles sound .. try reinstalling directx or upgrading.
btw casle wolfenstein also uses the quake engine .. do any other games cause a problem?
if not then it a quake3 problem.
are you using the lastest versionof q3 1.32?
