quake1 licence?

I tried writing to activision (as we all know, they're a bunch of uninformed 'tards), id doesn't have any contact info and i cannot seem to get it out of licence page on id's site.
So, can someone explain me, do i need to own a copy of quake1 legaly to set up a q1/qw inet server (public, with no charging of any kind)??
(also for q2?!)
And one more thing, where to the ------ i'm i gonna find quake1 to buy (if i need an original)?!!??!
(activision doesn't have it in sales, id store is dead defenetly now - and was for the last couple of years)
If someone knows for sure - TNX!!

theres still the quake BFG pack available which contains quake 1 2 and 3 so there you go
you can also try emailing toddh@id for the more legal issues

Indeed you are right - the Id Store which as the "Buy" button doesn't work. Its amazing Id can't have a simple shopping cart app working for pure internet downloads of games or even just the legal serial codes! And if they don't want to handle internet shopping, it would be trivial to simply remove the nonfunctional link from their site to avoid their own embarrassment.

Luckily it seems someone gave you their old Quake number - I hope it works.

Doesn't QuakeWorld have a seperate dedicated server? If so, then you can simply download that without ever having to buy Quake. I know it's possible with Quake 3.

i'm sure you can still get Q1,2,3 bundled together for peanuts. try amazon 2nd hand otherwise. or you could recompile the source code and reconstruct the assets from scratch. or you could suck my everloving cock

equake comes with the pak files, and they aren't supposed to be free.

TNX a lot ppl, i wrote all the links & mails down
BUT you still haven't answered my question - do i need to own a quake 1 copy to make an install for a public server?
(as i have to own Q2/Q3/Q4, at least in my country, and show the original pack if the inspection comes)
And is there a store that sells original quake (not used)??
(plz don't mention amazon/e-bay - they don't ship in half the countries)

i think you do have to own it.
if you cant use amazon we have no way of knowing what stores are in your country
as i said theres still a Quake pack floating about so you might want to make a couple of calls. or scour your local second hand stores

You can skip quake108 as patches are irrelevant and unneccessary when using a custom engine.

That should be the serial number, usualy found on the cd box.
