Is it possible you could disable the router for a few moments to see if it would connect? At least you'd know if the router was causing the problem or not.

That would be a big pain in the neck , i have my router and modem bridged ppoe , so i would have to change alot of settings on both devices .. all my other games work no prob .. there is even a preset for the ports on my router and i have them enabled but still no dice .. i appreciate the responses and the ideas and help

Do you have a dmz option in the router? That would be a relatively painless way of doing it, a one click process, wouldn't require that you mess with your other settings extensivly. If dmz works, then you don't have the proper settings for q3. Did you allow the entire port range btw? q3 can broadcast across a handful of ports iirc, I don't remember the entire list though.

yeah i put it in the dmz and it didnt work . and i opened up ports from 27660 to 30000 that should be enough. 1.32 is the latest patch?

1.32 is the latest patch, yep. It's mandatory to join the latest servers too.
The next thing you can try is manually connecting a game server we know is up and running.
Try loading quake, going to the console (key below ESC) and entering:
\connect 195.149.21.141:27996
then hit enter.
If you get to 'awaiting gamestate' or further, then your connection is working.
The server is a threewave one, chances are you won't have all the files you need to get right into the game, but it's good enough to prove your connection is working, or not.

Have you checked the game runs ok offline, ie, have you loaded up a skirmish with some bots and run around a bit?

Then I think it must be some break in the chain of:
1. Firewall on your PC
2. Router
3. ISP
Could be any of those. If you've got 2 PCs on your home network you can try getting a local network game up and running to rule out #1.

Stuck at "Awaiting Gamestate" or "No response from master server" Error
While you are connecting, open up the console (to open the console press the tilde key "~" on your keyboard), are there any error messages?
- Try using an alternative game server browser, such as the All-Seeing Eye.
- Make sure a firewall is not blocking it, (better yet turn it off IF you have a hardware based one).
- This problem seems to afflict some users behind routers. If you have a router try the following:
1. Try playing online without the router to see if that works.
2. If the router is using DCHP, try setting your computer to a static IP.
3. Right-click on the Quake III shortcut you use to start the game and select Properties. In the Target field you'll see a line like "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe", add the Quake III net_port command to specify a unique communication port for each system. The complete field should look like this:
"C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set net_port 27660
4. Forward ports 27960 and 27660.
- As a temporary fix, try this: Edit your hosts file (located at "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc" in WinXP) and add this line to the end:
(Type it in, do not cut and paste)
127.0.0.1 authorize.quake3arena.com
- Open the console while you are trying to connect to the server by pressing the tilde key ("~") on your keyboard and type "/timescale 200". This will allow you to attempt to connect to a server at a faster rate.
