Lo axah!
Zallright, The router will have NAT, And with the NAT system there is a hardware based Firewall. So dont be worried about Hiding the internal IP to the outside world, that is all taken care of with the NAT service.
Now, for the only part that you should be Worried about is WIRELESS if the router has it.
On a WIRED computer, go into the Routers Set ( Click here
http://192.168.1.1 ) enter in the routers password ( Default pass is Admin no username ) Then click on Wireless, Then there will be a security Tab. Click there and pick your Security settings.
a little explenation for this though:
WEP, you can do this in 64bit or 128 bit flavours. a good choice fora novice, but i warn you, if someone wants to get onto that wireless signal it would only take them 20 mins to crack it. Moving on...
WPA ( you will prob have this with a Firmware Upgrade ) is MUCH more secure then WEP, This will use a Word instead of Random Keys and etc, this Method has not been cracked YET.
WPA2 ( you might not have this ) as an insault to WPA, They Made it more secure.,
Mac AdressFiltering: This Process is ALLRIGHT for security reasons. All it does is makes a "list" of MAc Adresses that the router will talk to. if you are not on the list, the router ignores you. simple
( this may be on the first wireless page ) SSID Boadcasting, This is where the router sends out a "Becon" to let the wifi cards know that its there, i would say the best move here is to LEave it on, Get the Clients connected and working, then Turn it off. Usually they will not have a problem connecting again or staying connected After that.
Persioanally i am running a Linksys 802.11G router ( WRT56G V4 ) and i am running WPA2, and No SSID broadcast.
And for the IP Based question, This all depends on your firmware and the Vir of the router. on the base Firmwares for my Linky they would change Every ~3 weeks ( Due to the DHCP Lease time ), Now that i am running a Custom Firmware its not.
the other option that you could do if you want a Static Internal IP is Bind the Ip to the adapter.
to bind the ip: Start

Run

CMD
in the dop window type "ipconfig /all " without quotes.
pres enter, you will get this:
Code: Select all
C:\Documents and Settings\AmIdYfReAk>ipconfig /all

Now, right click on "my network places" and go to properties.
right click on your network adapter and click on properties.
in that window, scroll down untill you see "TCP/IP" click on it once to highlight it, then click on Perperties.
then you will be presented with this,
[img=http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/3333/tcpip2hy.jpg]
click on "Use the follwoing IP" and "Use the following DNS" and fill in the fields with the Stuff from that Dos window that you have open.
And BAM! the ip wont change.
mind you, i would put the ip a little higher in the range, just for the offchange that your computer is off and someone else plugs there comp in and the DHCP server gives them your IP.
anyway, yea, my keyboard is smoking from all of this typing, so i neeed to jet.. i hope this helps mang!
