Can players on PCs play against people playing on MACs (whether its over the net or on a LAN)?

Yes.
There are some dumb limitations regarding Linux users being unable to play on Windows servers, aside from that I think it's working.
Still no XBOX-PC linking.

Did the Xbox users get an original Grunt model? And if they did, what the hell does it look like?

hmmm, dumb and linux should never be used in the same sentence
, however dumb and jagwah is another matter, have at it...
I think if the windows servers add the game100.pk4 to q4base it would work fine (earlier versions of q4)
I think it has been fixed up now, as my windows installs have this file in them

That fixes Windows players on Linux, but not the other way around.
At least, last time I checked. I'd have to fire up a liveCD and dick about to test it, an I'm laz-e =)

I think when both Winblows and linsux have the file, it's a 2 way street?

The point releases for Windows and Linux both ship:
game000.pk4

- windows
game100.pk4

- linux
game200.pk4

- mac
This implies that you can play against a mac. I believe the Mac now has v1.2, and so almost certainly has the same 3 files as the win+lin builds, so shouldnt have any issues.
However, the 1.2 sdk does not compile on a Mac, so there are currently no mods for Macs. Therefore, Mac players cannot play on q4max, xbm, ra4 etc servers.
I believe the mod issue will be resolved with the 1.3 SDK release.
