UK Posters: First Car Choice?

With any luck I'll be passing my driving test soon, and as a result I'm currently looking for a car to make my own. The limit isn't my budget, as I've squirreled away quite a bit from my weekly wages for the past year or so, leaving me with around £1,500 to play with, although I’ll admit that I’d rather not surpass the 1k mark unless I find something I can’t resist.

The problem is insurance – being a 21yr old male isn’t good in the eyes of an insurer, and being a 21yr old with his first car makes it even worse.

I’ve done a little snooping and I’m drawn towards the following:

Peugeot 205 Gti.
Volkswagen Golf (1989/1995)
Honda Civic (3 door hatchback only!)

I’d arguably be able to get cheaper insurance on a Saxo or a Corsa or something of that ilk, but I’d rather spend a little extra to get something I actually like. I’ve looked into a Tigra before today, and although the car is little more than a Corsa with a better boot the engine size causes the insurance quotes to leap up somewhat. I know that the 205 would burn me a little, but a friend of mine had one a while back, and it was a very nice car to drive.

Do any of you own one of the above or know anybody who does, and if so, what would you recommend?

Note: Anybody that yells ”rice!” at the inclusion of the civic can fuck off – they are cheap and reliable. What more do you want from your first car?

I wish the US would adopt the licensing and insurance system you lot have. It would keep so many fucking morons off the roads.

Hmm, do to just what I hear about the 205Gti I have to vote for it. I've never drivin one before though but hear awsome things about it. I really wish they had them here in America, I'd absolutely would love to drive one of those things just once to see what all the hype is about. :icon25:

early 90's Civic (Si or what ever your sport version name is if your looking for a fun car) is also a decent car, I had one for a breif period of time. Light weight, potent engine(for its time/size/class) and exelent handling.. ahh back when honda still gave them double wishbone suspension front and back.. the good ol days. Good gasmilage, very reliable and took the beatings . Very capable autocross car here as well in many of their classes.
No comment on the golfs, I've only been around the old ones, and the fat newer ones.
