RAM Question

I have an older HP Pavilion 772N. It has a 2.26 P4 with a 533 MHz FSB. The RAM configuration is 2 banks total and both have 256MB modules in them. I was wondering what RAM I could put in it to get 1GB. Would I need PC2100 RAM or could I get PC3200, which is cheaper, and would it run at PC2100 speeds?

Well after reveiwing NewEgg's RAM prices I noticed that PC2100 RAM (DDR 266) was not much more then PC3200 RAM (DDR 400). So I guess my question is, will standard DDR 266 work with the HP?

Well crucial says PC2700 (DDR 333). My bad. Well I looked at their recommended and then their standard PC2700 and there is a price difference, of about a dollar, but I am still wondering if anyone knows if the HP 772n uses a propietary setup or whether standard PC2700 RAM will work. Also I noticed that neweggf has Kingston HyperX with a 2 cas latency for 2 dollars more then RAM with a 2.5 cas latency, do you think the mobo would allow it to run at 2 cas latency?

Dependings on the mobo but CAS timings usually work by SPD (meanining the mobo ruyns the timings the RAM is factory-set for).

Well I emailed HP and this is the responce I got.
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
In reviewing your message I understand that you are looking for the compatible type of RAM that can be installed in your Pavilion 772n desktop PC.
I am glad that you have forwarded your concerns and have given me a chance to assist you with this matter.
Tedder, I have checked the specifications of your PC and found that your Pc came preinstalled with 512/2100 DDR (2 x 256). The maximum you can install is upto 1GB and it should be PC2100 DDR266. It is not recommend to install PC2700 DDR RAM.
Next, HP recommends that you purchase HP branded memory. If that is not possible, purchase DIMMs from one of the following manufacturers:
* Micron
* Siemens
These DIMMs have been tested with HP Pavilion PCs. HP cannot guarantee any non-HP memory.
So I feel that purchasing 2 512MB modules of Kingston PC2100 (DDR 266) will work, if not I guess I can send them back to newegg.

PC2700 would be fine honestly.. Its what ive put in a few customers machines because they wanted ram NOW and best buy dont carry anything slower than that..
It works flawless, just dont get to crazy on ram timings..

Do you think any harm would come of puting my Corsair XMS PC3200 (DDR 400) in the machine and seeing what it registers as?

Well I tried it and right after I got past the BIOS, which registered them as two 512MB sticks (which they are) running at PC2100 (which they aren't), then it BSOD's and restarted a few times. So I guess using PC3200 is out of the question.

i would get into the bios and make sure its not trying crazy timmmings... I.e. Cas2 ras to cas 2, ras precharge 2, etc.

A good idea, however being a motherboard altered by HP the BIOS gives me no such details about the RAM.
