a gaming website...

Like zone.com, heat.net, and battle.net used to be etc... the original Q3 install even had a option in the server browser to only look for Mplayer servers...

Do the people who are "high up there" even know this hole still exists?

Or is it merely a leftover forgotten...?

Holy shit, Mplayer.

That brings back memories. I was an aimbotting fag back then until I realized I could do better without it.

I can give you guys a little history ;)

Quake3World.com was the official community site for Quake III Arena. It was a bit of a partnership between id Software and Mplayer.com. Mplayer.com hosted and maintained the site, as a part of the Xtreme Network division which I had started... it was a network of about 80 fan sites, along with many (about 50 or so) hosted sites for users/mods, etc.

I remember designing the original site back in the day (November '99) over the weekend, with only a few assets that were available... (screenshots ;)). You can see what it looked like here:
http://web.archive.org/web/199911280021 ... world.com/. It had a few other evolutions as the site continued to evolve and receive quite the traffic: http://web.archive.org/web/200006211511 ... world.com/

Of course it looks TINY on today's desktop resolutions... but it was simple, and it did the job! We released the Q3A demo exclusively on the site for a few days, then it went out to the rest of the world.

After a bit of time, I moved on to work with Infogrames, Inc. down the road from the Mplayer (HearMe) offices, and started managing the Unreal brands online, amongst many other action titles. Before I moved on, my sister Cali Girl (http://www.caligirl.net), who was also working with me at Mplayer at the time, transitioned into managing Quake3World.com, and I would say she did a fine job at it! She came to me about a month after I left and asked if I could help re-design the site again - so I did, again with very few art assets to do so, and this is what it looked like: http://web.archive.org/web/200103011523 ... world.com/

About 3-4 months after I moved on, GameSpy (now owned by IGN) acquired Mplayer.com (http://pc.gamezone.com/news/06_18_01_02_05PM.htm), which I believe turned out to be a bit more of a malicious merger, but that's my own opinion.

Of course with PlanetQuake already existing on the GameSpy Network, Quake3World.com was more of red-headed stepchild... but it has survived, which I am extremely happy and proud of. I give big props to DooMer and the folks who continue to admin this - even IGN and GameSpy for keeping it alive!

Anyhow, that is the history in a nutshell ;)
