Anyone have a good application that enables you to move all of your music from your ipod to your computer, so that I can format my computer without having to backup itunes first?

yeah I've used my ipod as a hd before, but it wasn't particularly successful, and I'd rather not go down that road again, especially as I have a 1st gen - unreliability in a white box.

i use anapod. it's not free, but it's worth not having to use iTunes (a piece of stinky shit).

gtk-pod for linux can do it. I'm not sure there are any live-cds that carry that package though

it's totally worth the $25 one time fee and subsequent free upgrades as long as you have your ipod.

If its a windows machine I think you can just choose "show hidden files" and view the music folder on the ipod. Then drag them to your HD and open the files in iTunes. It should import them with the proper names, as opposed to the four-letter names the ipod gives each file.

Will try that out since iTunes isn't working at the moment.

I use EphPod to copy files from the iPod. Hardly an iTunes killer, but that part works well and it's free.

I've done this.
You should be able just to view all the folders on the iPod just by making hidden folders visible in Explorer... I don't think it needs to be in hard drive mode for this either.
