weird graphics in Q3

I just removed all Q3 apps from win98se (which I have on one partition) and reinstalled them under XP. On the same computer with the same Geforce FX 5900 card, same driver version, etc. ...
The game is running fine, but almost every map looks ugly in certain areas because of these mysterious lights or colors that appear on many brush edges / texture surfaces.

I checked various ingame and driver settings, did some searches on the webbenstien if there's a bug, but I can't find anything.
Can anyone help?
TIA

Why? That would be one of the easier things to fix.

Normally my first thought would have been upgrading drivers too, but it seems I've been taken too much in all those expertish discussions on the driver boards, where ppl with older v-cards are recommended to rather stay with old but "faster" and "more stable" driver versions, or even to downgrade the driver in case of problems. About nvidia drivers I read several times a FX 5900 wouldn't get any improvements from newer drivers anyway, just because they care more about the newer 6x00 (and up) series, so I stayed with my old driver. And even proper uninstalling a driver seems to potentially cause big problems these days "if you don't use Driver Cleaner!" and whatnot ... - that's why I thought 'good god, not this (again)'.
But the driver update (to 81.89) has fixed it completely - the game looks cooler than ever now - and as a nice side-effect my shiny metal bug in HL2 is gone, too
thx and cheers

Generally it's not advised to use 2-3 year old drivers. Update for improved performance and quality.

Doh! After a few more runs I noticed that 81.98 has another Q3 bug with the ingame texture quality setup. Same shit with 84.21.
Now I downgraded to 78.01 and everything seems fixed.
