So I just picked up Ultimate Quake ...

I just picked up Ultimate Quake for Q1 and Q2 (having a third Q3 key doesn't hurt, either). Now, I haven't played Q1 nor Q2 since the late '90s, and I'm wondering about the things that I have missed. I'm looking for opinions on:
- The best single player clients for Q1 and Q2.
- The best multiplayer clients for Q1 and Q2.
- Any "must download" content (maps, mods, etc.) that I should be aware of.
I'll probably find most of the good stuff myself eventually, but it can't hurt to ask for input. Also, don't mention any standalone games based on the Q1/Q2 source, since I've probably tried them already (Nexuiz, Alien Arena, and Warsow for sure).
BTW, keep in mind that I'm using Linux, so ideally any mods should have released source code that I can compile with GCC 4.x. Windows DLLs will not work, and chances are neither will old Linux libs. (This stuff just isn't an issue with Q3... I don't know what Id was thinking when it decided to drop the VM support for the D3 engine.

)

Check the links thread in id Legends...plenty of stuff for quake and q2. I don't know jack about linux, but I do believe fuhquake has a linux version.

Hmm, that's a good starting point, but it's a bit obsolete. For instance, it doesn't include fitzQuake, Qrack, r1Q2, etc. I'll just dig around, I guess.

Okay, thanks for the suggestions and links. Here's what I've found so far:
For Q1,
- Darkplaces seems to be the best client for Linux right now (though ezQuake might be worth looking into).
- JoeQuake and Qrack look nice too, but there are no Makefiles (so I can't easily build them), and no Linux builds.
- fitzQuake and fuhQuake appear to be dead.
For Q2,
- EGL seems to be nice, but also crashes in vanilla SP...
- There's an old version of Quake2Forge in Debian, but it's been abandoned upstream and I can't make it past the first scenario in single player (it just ... stops).
- R1Q2 fails to compile (OpenAL headers have changed).
If the problems that I've experienced so far are any indicator of what I'm in for, then I'm not looking forward to trying Q1 & Q2 MP and various mods...

Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated, especially for Q2.

Ah, nice looking forum. I'm afraid that I judged the site by the front page, and closed the tab immediately after I saw it. Thanks.

fuhquake isn't dead...it just migrated over to quakeworld.nu to become part of eQuake (and now possibly fquake). It is still the most popular client among those who still play qw.
equake is just fuhquake w/ a bunch of extra content (and possibly some fixes) added into a convenient package.

However, it does appear that some folks are moving onto ezQuake (which is not the same thing as eQuake). Both ezQuake and eQuake are still being developed AFAIK.
