Educate me about the American law enforecment system plz.
Counties have sheriffs. ok.
Sheriffs are like boss's of all the other policemen and are chosen in elections. Right?
Big cities don't have sheriffs? At least not in the movies?
Is that because big cities aren't counties or don't belong to counties?
How does that work?

The county sherrif is the head law enforcement officer for the entire county, excluding towns and cities. He has deputies working for him. This pretty much gives them jurisdiction over all the rural areas, and I believe it overlaps in towns, etc.
City police departments will have a police commissioner and under him a police chief. Then there may be multiple departments(precincts) under the chief's control.
Then there are the State Police, who have jurisdiction everywhere in the state. They're based in various State Police Barracks' around the state.

All (or at least most) cities and towns have a police dept. This runs independently, afaik, from the Sheriff's office. Outside city limits, sheriffs and deputies have jurisdiction over the county.SplishSplash wrote:Educate me about the American law enforecment system plz.

Sheriffs don't patrol big cities because often city police depts. have a larger and more effective force than the sheriff's office.
State troopers have jurisdiction between counties and patrol state highways.
