Anyone out there playing BF2 on a laptop?

I am asking with 2 things in mind.

1. My wife and I are going to buy our son a laptop for his Senior
year in High school. My wife and I think a laptop would be a better
idea than a desktop. We're in the mind-set that he's earned a
laptop. He loves to create with Bryce3d as he did in his prior years
in school.

2. He loves the FPS games as I do and I wanted to use BF2 as a
starter or benchmark for his playing?

I really would like someone that is currently playing on a laptop that
could tell me how well it plays and what they think would be best?

I know people might want to have this topic moved but I really do
think it has the Technolgy in Technology & Troubleshooting 100% on. *evil grin*

T&T mods or admins? If you feel it should be moved? Move er on over
I really just wanted to get some feedback from people that might
know how it plays on laptops.

they were really pumping up the new intel dual centrino's at quakecon this year.

yup, that's about the extent of my laptop knowledge, brutha.

I am looking into the dual-core processors for the laptops as well.

I'm not at all knowledgable with laptops. I'm still working on what's
good and what's not.

Anyone out there running BF2 on a laptop?

I see all these mean systems IE: the XPS Dell Laptops, Alienware,
among other not soo named brand.

Hope someone has some insight on the laptops with some gaming
back-bone>?! Hehehe

Tho, that new "showstopper" looks wicked.

A couple of guys that were at our last LAN party were playing BF2 on the new Dell XPS laptops, with the Geforce 7800 upgrade.

The game looked and played great on their systems.

My knowledge of Dell's laptops are all-round positive.

Alienware PCs are fantastic machines but you pay a premium for them. If you really really wanted one then you'd be better going to Alienware's suppliers direct (Sager, I think they're called). But I'd still recommend a dell machine over the Alienware boxes. Not least of all because the Alienware laptops are quite large (at least, the powerful ones are) and hence not so suited as a laptop.

You could also consider a MacBook Pro with Windows XP running on it, assuming you can stretch to one with a decent graphics card (cant remember their product line).

The only thing that puts me off those laptop models overall is the sheer size though... they're fucking massive and heavy and run real hot and get a battery life in minutes not hours... Having RAID and SLi on a laptop is pretty swish, but sacrificing all the qualities of a laptop kinda defeats the purpose.

Hmm, I wouldn't advise you on going to Alienware, they charge you just for the name :S

I play BF2:Demo on my Dell Laptop (Inspiron 9300). Purchased it about this time, last year. 1.86GHz Pentium-M, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6800 Go. I normally play with low settings for visibility reasons, but tried setting everything to High + 4xAA, fps hovered around 50-60+fps most of the time, at worst dipping to 40s, it ran good (playing on Gulf of Oman, 48 player server, and chopper whoring), basically I have no issue with the FPS affecting the gameplay, in fact it is not a factor for me when playing. As long as you get a decent proc + good video card and sufficient memory, you should be able to run all the latest games without problem.

If you decide to buy a Dell, try and look for coupons, ie. http://www.gottadeal.com/dell.php , you might be able to solve a few bucks, also the RAM prices are inflated, so you can save quite a bit by selecting the lowest amount of memory when you configure the machine at dell's website and buying memory elsewhere such as from an online vendor like NewEgg.

Be aware, as Foo has already stated, these laptops are essentially desktop replacements-- they are huge and have short battery life, so don't expect to be lugging it around a whole lot.

I have been soo looking at Dells every spare minute I get and the
XPS system do look like the route to take. I was looking at the
Alienware simply because I saw an ad and was curious.

I did find a nice system Aurora m9700

Was just thinking of the above system only in what actually comes
with the system. I may be totally snowed in what I'm seeing but
the system looks to be rather up there as far as hardware.

I'm un-knowledgable as far as AMD or intel and with the Processor
in the Alienware system comparing that to the Intel DUO processor
setups. *gulp* I'm still trying to wade thru all the tech stuff
and figure out some. Hehehe.

Good to hear the positive feedback on the Dell laptops.

I for one have an old ( am still on it right now ) Dell 8200 desktop
that the only thing I hate is that the memory in it is like 10 times
as much as standard memory. But no one could forsee the future
and see that the RDRAM would not be going anywhere. LOL!

I just don't want to get in on a laptop and think I can upgrade it
after I buy it and find out it's more expensive.... But looking at the
way things are with these systems? It's looking very promising.

As for the MacBook Pro? I'm not sure but I do also have one other
person I would like to ask about this laptop buying. My son.

I need to get him into telling me exactly what he thinks he needs
and wants. Knowing what he will be thinking about doing with the
laptop is a good thing to know before going all out on some gaming
system. When all he might want to do is play SOLITAIRE?!!! :icon28:

also it would probably help, the next time you're in a store that sells laptops is to check them out even if they're not the particular make you're looking at--just to give you a better idea on what size & screen size you want, i mean there are pics on net, but sometimes you want to check it out in-person ya know?

i didnt know much about laptops when i decided i was going to get one , but after doing a little research i was able to narrow down the search and make an informed purchase. doing the same, (which it appears you are doing), and im sure you will be very happy with your choice

& Circuit City ( those are the closest )
I was actually thinking of avoiding those those all together but
what you just wrote made me realize that I do need to see them in
person and just get the real-feel and picture on size. I feel stupid
for not thinking that and wanting to avoid the stores that had
examples ( sizes ) of the systems I was looking at online. DOH!
