Anyone have one? I'm surrounded by them all day at work and man are they beautiful creatures. A deal finally fell in my lap where I can get the
NEC 42" vm5 for under dealers cost. Anyone made the switch from TV to Plasma is it worth it?
It gives me a few added bonuses over the home models like
- Halflife doubled to 60,000 hours
- Better anti-glare filtering
- brighter display

IMO, plasma isn't worth it. Not yet anyway.
For teh money you put into a plasma TV, you could by a top of the line 2000+ lumens projector and screen.
Higher resolutions, adjustable screen size, portable, connects easily to pretty much all console machines, the list goes on and on.

LCDs kick Plasma's and DLP's ass.
I had ample opportunity to compare while working at the Cebit.
/I'm pondering getting a projector though, because they are actually affordable. But I probably won't.

I'd definitely rank plasma a distant third, but all the DLP sets I've watched in stores looked much crisper and more vivid than the nearby LCD sets. Of course, they still looked rather nice.

The wife is on fond of DLPs, she said if I wanted to get a new TV that it would have to be a Plasma or LCD. I'm not a big fan of the projector. I had one for a while and it was OK, but it sucked ass for daytime viewing.

Don't think I can for that price We just struck up a partnership with NEC and they are offering that model at below dealer, I can't get an LCD for any where near it.
I have a perfectly good Sony Wega, the upgrade to plasma is worth it, the cost to upgrade to LCD is not

I've found yes, lower end projectors aren't bright enough for home theatre, but I've also found most retailers do not stock high end models with higher ANSI lumen ratings. If you see teh models with 2000+ lumens, they're pretty much as bright as a DLP tv given a proper screen surface.
I've been eyeballing this model from Toshiba
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pde ... id=1291021
"Packaged in a small form factor (6.2 lbs), the high-performance TDP-T90U Series features DLP technology, 2,200 ANSI lumens, native XGA resolution (1024 x 768), and a 2000:1 contrast ratio to deliver bright, captivating images that can go anywhere, anytime. It's innovative new design includes a host of multimedia capabilities and connectivity options such as composite, component and S-video inputs, audio in/out capabilities, and a special monitor output connector that allows users to view presentations from an external display in addition to what is projected on the screen.
The Toshiba TDP-T90U Conference Room Projector supports TV (NTSC, PAL, SECAM), HDTV/DTV, DVD, and RGB signal inputs. Input terminals include 2-video (1-RCA, 1-S-Video), 5 audio (1x stereo mini-jack, 2x RCA for Video, 2x RCA for S-video), and 2 RGB for multiple input sources. Automatic Digital Keystone correction (+/- 15 degrees) is also supported."
But to each his own.

It's also a matter of taste:
All kinds of screens have their advantages:
Plasma: Good contrast
LCD: Sharpness
DLP: Very "bright" and "smooth" image (because of the lack of wires between the individual pixels). Plus you can look at them from an angle without color distortions. They're not as sharp though.
I like LCDs best, but of course they're also the most expensive choice.

A guy I know has a 28" LCD tv and I think it looks *too* sharp. He has PAL digital satellite (Sky). I prefer the fuzzier look of a regular tv to be honest but I'd sure like a bigger tv than my 28" Sony widescreen tube.
I'm tempted to go look at a plasma just because of the size. I think it'd be great for movies.

For the price you're getting it for, I'd go with the plasma, but if you were to pay regular retail, I'd go LCD.

not much for me, but for your avg person they don't want to have to draw the curtains/blinds to watch. lcd's are better in that regard.

i can't warrant spending that much money on something that i would rarely use. i watch (at most) 3 movies a week on my television. the other times i'm in front of my computer. thus i went with an Apple Cinema display. mmmmmmmmm
