I need help with strafe jumping. People in game have tried to explain it to me but I just dont get it.
If I have a long straight path if I jump enough I usually can get going faster, but I cant do it at will and I can't do it in small spaces.
Can somebody please help/tell me how to do it?

You should be holding both forwards/sideways keys when straffing, especially when going around corners. Also use your mouse, depending which direction your're going to turn, turn the mouse (slightly) in that direction.
Did you rebind your sideways keys for straffing instead of just turning right? By default they only turn (uneeded, you should turn with your mouse).

you will know what to do when you see this....
when you strafe, dont hold the jump key to long or you wont gain that much speed, try to turn youre mouse and switch strafe directons + jump at the same time. you also have to know what angles to use at what speed when turning youre mouse. one tip is to strafe as narow as possible

As strafing is one of the basics of trickjumping, it's everywhere in the movie. You might want to see the rest of the movie too, some are somewhat useful in DM/CTF/1v1 games as well.

Install the proper codec (google for the k-lite codec pack).

Thanks, that worked.
and OMG! I'ts not fair I want to be able to do all that, but I know I never will!! The strafe jumping looks a lot harder than I thought, but the plasma climb looks easy enough!
It's not fair! I'm guessing everybody on on these forums is probably able to play like that, I would get my ass kicked so bad!!
Anybody why says quake is for spamming noobs needs to watch this!!

I learnt how to straffe jump by watching Fatal1ty demos and just seeing what he does, what angles he takes off etc... it takes time. I practiced the rocket to rail jump on pro-q3dm6 for about 30 minutes a night for weeks till I could do it 90% of the time. After making that jump consistently, you know you have it down.

I strafe jumped just by trial and error. Its not hard, its just takes a certain amount of timing, then you can pull it off anywhere!
Still having trouble strafe-jumping without a deceny runup, though :P

Try starting with a circle jump. This will give you great acceleration for your first strafe jump :
Stand 90° away from your target and run a close (~1.5 x 1.5 virtual meters) quarter-circleinto the direction of your target, start first SJ at the end of the quarter circle.
Search google for q3a movement/tricking tutorials for more info if my description sucks.
The Defrag Mod for q3a will also help a lot if you're thinking on starting q3a trickjumping. See

OPC1 here
Took me a while to get all the way to the end but it's one of the easier maps to learn strafing. I couldn't reach the end after 1 day, keep practicing...

i love rocketjumping...
to be honest, i lose my acceleration when I go to hard turns (similar to a car).
