Why do Americans..

.. say o6/o7 etc when you are saying, for example, 2006 and shorten it to 06..
We say zero6.. you guys say "oh"6.. how come?
I dont find any o's in 2006.. i only find zero's.

an honest guess would be that "oh" is a shortening of zero so that only the last syllable is spoken.

I've always said "oh six". You always use "oh" for years and dates. I guess someone skipped English class a couple of times.
