I typed that but again, the "Not Connected To A Server" message comes up. BTW, I'm playing the demo of the game. Is this a feature that's not in the demo and only available on the full version of the game??? Thanks for any replies.

Join a server and try it?

cg_thirdperson 1 is correct.

cg_thirdperson 1 is correct.
Type it in the console while the demo is running.
Also cg_thirdpersonangle and cg_thirdpersonrange.
Thirdperson follows the player, and is not free floating.

You may wish to check out CPMA at http://www.promode.org .
CPMA is a Quake 3 modification.
The CPMA demo viewer has thirdperson, range, and angle, control built in.
Also slow-motion, fast-motion, lots of other stuff.
See cpma\docs\demoplay.txt in the CPMA folder after installation.

Multiview demos (MVD) are CPMA demos that provide viewing of all players all the time.
You may download MVD's from:

cg_thirdperson 1 is not incorrect. It works in demos as well as regular play. cg_thirdperson 1 doesn't give you free roaming capabilities though (as you know). But it does allow you to watch in thirdperson (which is what the initial question was).
