A few Windows Vista questions

For anyone who knows or is testing it.

1. Is it backwards compatible with all games that run in XP?

2. Can you trim down the desktop to performance and Win 2K look, like XP does?

3. Will Direct X 10 require that I get a new video card?

4. How much HD will the OS take up by itself (i.e. if I just want to create a partition for the OS vs. programs).

5. Will games run slower due to Vista's higher system requirements?

Thank you. :icon31:

For future reference, delete and repost. Easy.

1. Haven't really tested games on it.
2. possibly, haven't messed with that either
3. I haven't had any problems with mine so far. GF6600
4. Shows 12 gigs on mine
5. see #1

1) No. not all.
2) Yes. Its still a mem hog.
3) No. But to take advantage of DX10 yes
4) Yep 12ish gigs
1) No. I got WoW running, and honestly, i didnt see any drop or increase in FPS what so ever. Once its out and things are patched for vista, id assume performance will be a bit better due to the way direct x takes over and such.

You can't delete once someone else has posted after you.

5. According to some sources games will actually run faster on Vista due to it doing a better job of unloading stuff from the memory and stopping unnessecary services while running a game.

Yes, in the final version it is supposed to basically unload the Aero UI while a DirectX or OpenGL game is running in fullscreen mode.

Is there an ETA on the release date?

If I get the 'upgrade' version, will it do a fresh install or only an upgrade overtop of XP?

I recall the upgrade process from 98 to XP (if you didn't do a fresh format/install) would leave XP fairly unstable. Is that the same case with Vista?

How do I know if I should get the 32 bit or 64 bit version? My notebook = intel core duo. Can you dual boot?

You would probably be better off waiting a year or so before you get it (once the dust settles)... theres probably going to be plenty of problems with various apps not working correctly and other compatibility issues, which will get better as the os matures. I won't be getting it for a while, xp serves me just right for now.

I disagree with the suggestion that a person should wait a year before upgrading. 2000 Pro had very few problems when it came out and XP was even better. Theres no reason to think that Vista won't be even more stable and compatible than it's predecessors especially since its built on the 2003 Server codebase which is rock solid.

If you know how to dual boot with XP and Vista, please share here:

Install Vista on a seperate partition or drive and it will take care of that. I've got them dual boot right now. Really pretty easy.

When you install it, does allow you to create a new partition or do I need a program like PartitionMagic?

Also, when I eventually go full Vista, and want to remove XP, will it freak out the system?

Yes, it will let you create a partition.

Not sure about that, my advice would be to format and reinstall if you want to trash XP.

Stick with 32 bit unless you're doing hardcore programming or developing. I suspect the Vista release will be accompanied by more 64bit builds of programs, but right now, the lack of them will just make things annoying.
