I was in hull the other day marvelling some of the bridge work there, and the elaborate lock mechanism they've got at the mouth of the Hull where it meets the humber est.
They've got like a 5-storey-high span like the one in your picture, but cast as a building with solid concrete structure... and it's got a full-length metal block that can be lowered into the mouth of the river to block the entire thing up.
I guess they use it to prevent tidal issues and flooding. But it looks awesome.

The building in the background is The Deep. S'a fancy aquarium we were visiting. Not bad, but could have been better. Was more interesting stuff in hull itself than the there.

schweet, i always thought hull was a shitheap
and just to add a lil more info; ours was built because at the time they couldnt build bridges high enough over the river to allow ships to pass through
so instead of going for the draw bridge design they went for this, which you drive onto the little gondola below and ships you across
think theres only 2 of them left working in the world, the others in Middlesbrough but ours is the oldest :]
