LCD's and limited range of colours?

Over the past few months, I've been contemplating buying a new LCD monitor as opposed to a CRT, especially since monitors with much faster response times are now becoming available.
I'll be using it primarily for gaming, level editing with next generation game engines and computer graphics, so quality is definitely an issue.
One concern I've been having with LCD's is some of the stuff that I've been reading about LCD's being able to display a limited amount of colours. This will become an issue for me as I will most likely be working with HDR images in the near future as games are now implementing HDR content.
Here's the link that got me thinking:

What are your thoughts on this?

Hi,
well I've been working with digital motion graphics for last 10+ years and I've yet to see a TFT that is anywhere near matching the colour rendering and fidelity of a good CRT - not even Apple's much praised (and really expensive) displays make me happy. TFTs really bad spot is the 'knee' between full black or full white into the near black / white areas - they have a pretty nasty step there if you make a greyscale ramp and check it. And when playing back video they add some odd kind of noise in midrange areas that looks like bad mpeg coding even when playing back uncompressed HD material. So I still sit here with 2 bulky CRTs on my desk plus a PAL video monitor.
And don't even get me started on the fugliness called plasma displays ...
Just my $0.02
cheers

I'm coming back around full circle to the opinion that it's best to spend £500 on a solid CRT monitor than a dodgy LCD panel....

Well, I've been playing FarCry on my CRT with the HDR effects enabled and the difference is pretty cool. But if I were to play this on a LCD, would the effect be greatly diminished? Are there any LCD's out there that can display the full range of 8bit brightness resolution?
Foo: point taken, but lets assume that I have a reasonable amount of money to spend on a solid CRT or LED monitor...

a couple weeks ago i decided to take the plunge and buy one of the Apple Cinema Displays. so far i'm quite pleased by the brightness and size of the display (23 inch), but it does have the occasional flicker when playing games out of native resolution and dvd movies. other than that, i'm in love.

If you want the best colours available on LCD (and you want that) look into a nice Eizo monitor.
I'm not saying it comes close to a good CRT, but it's the best LCD anyway. I personnally use CRT, because it's better for what I do.
