To Install or not to install. That is the question.

I have found an old cd which has a Quake 3 Arena folder and have copied it to my C: drive. However it seems to be a copy of the already installed files. I.e. I can just click the Quake3.exe file and play the game even though i ran no setup files.

What are the technical implications of playing the game like this?

It may be linked but when playing single player on the first level no matter how many times i kill the enemy bot it always says your are winning with a score of 0. It doesn't seem to be registering the kills.

Thanks in advance.

Try patching it and it'll probably register the kills. I dunno.

As for playing without installing, no problems there:
Q3 requires just 2 files to run:
quake3.exe
\baseq3\pak0.pk3

Everything else is fluff, documentation, or patch files.

Ran the latest path, 1.32.

Now getting error
"client/server game mismatch: baseq3-1/"
Thats just trying to play single player.

In the command lines it says:
loading DLL file ui.
failed to load DLL, looking for qvm.

Not sure if thats relevent.

Any ideas Quake 3 guru? :)

Just recopy the pak0.pk3 file off the cd and replace it with the corrupt one.

Assuming it's not corrupted on the CD Media, that will work.
