Sata drives

I have a hard drive that failed, I think and it is a Sata.
If I plug it into another computer with a sata drive, will mine show up as a slave as with IDE?
I thought maybe I could access some files by doing it as a slave if I'm lucky.

Well are you doing a mirrored raid?
If so, just buy a replacement drive and you'll be all set.

yeah the plural makes it sound as if he's got more than one, doesn't it?
If you don't, then go ahead and slave it. Look for jumpers, etc. I've never looked at mine, so I don't know whether the primary/secondary is handled at the hardware level or must be done manually.

Well if he's doing a striped volume, he might have a hard time recovering his data.

And why would any person have only one sata drive?
I'm not sure if you could run even 1 sata drive.

Why not? Up until recently I ran just one and only picked up a second one because I needed more storage.

But do you have to run raid for a sata drive?

No...what gave you that idea? SATA drives are no different than IDE drives as far as Windows is concerned. RAID has just become a lot more common since SATA drives came out.

I always assumed sata drives were for raid.
So are sata drives any better than ide drives, even if you don't run them in raid.

They are a new "standard" if you can call it that. If buying new drives, you might as well get SATA's. IDE's are pretty much dead unless using with legacy components. There's no huge improvements, but better none-the-less.
BTW, slightly faster speeds, SATA cables are easier to use than parallel, don't have to worry about master/slave.
