Home key Vs Pro key

I know with xp hone you can use any valid cd and as long as you put the right code in, it will work.

Is it different for XP Pro?

My friend has a Dell laptop with a valid sticker on the bottom and he needs a reinstall. He cant find his disk so I used mine and when I had to type in his code, it said "not a valid key".

BOth are very real and legit.

Im wondering if XP Pro disks have a certain key that only works with that 1 cd?....unlike home

No, rather... there's a Retail, OEM and Corp version of both Home and Pro, and the keys are localised to each of those individual distribution types.

There may also be additional restrictions on a per-vendor level, but my laptop reinstalls fine with my OEM Home CD so I doubt it.

Pretty sure Dell also comes with slipstreamed restore discs that include the drivers and other software. You can probably just contact Dell and have them ship you one if the laptop is fairly recent.

As it happens my copy of pro is older and is sp1. Another friend has Pro and we installed with his disk [sp2] and the Dell key worked fine.

Thanks

You'll be OK once you're finished in the bathroom. Don't forget to wash your hands.
