My first business trip, I'm a little nervous :(

Just got the information for my trip this week. Going to meet with a client in Orlando on Thursday and Friday. I'm nervous and excited. Luckily my boss was already planning to be there Thursday so I wont be totally on my own to fuck things up the first day.
As a developer going to hear about how much our software sucks and how they think it should work, do I wear the standard slacks with a collared shirt or do I throw in a tie? I'm going to assume a full suit would be a bit much for someone in my position.

Na, you'll be fine. You might have one cocky cunt that might slip a little dig in but as a whole you'll find clients are very professional and just want what they pay for. That means treating you with respect in the hope you'll listen and deliver.

That's what I was thinking. Take a couple of my nice Express outfits.
I just hope I don't look like a fool. Only been here 4 months so I'm by no means the expert on our software but since I'm the one dedicated to their needs I'm on the hot seat.

I haven't done many of those but from what I've gathered, clients (or potentials) call for a meeting for the very reason of doing away with standard calls and formal e-mails. They are looking to speak to real human beings, not some stiff with a suit.
They'll want to have lunch, drink a few and make some jokes.
It's more about establishing a friendly relationship in which they can feel comfortable doing business with.
They want to feel like they can call you on a sunday and you'd pick up the phone etc.
I say show up in a professional manner yet be prepared to let loose, you just have to feel them out.

Yea, first rule: don't wear a suit unless you're in sales.
As for the tie, it's not important. What's important is that you look comfortable and confident. If you're not used to wearing a tie at all, and it makes you feel pretentious or otherwise uncomfortable, then that will be noticeable, and you would be better off not wearing one.

Always dress up the first time you meet a client. Once you've met a couple of times, you can be more casual.
Suits are for management and sales people. Everyone else just need a shirt and a nice pair of shoes. T-shirt and jacket is ok if it's a nice t-shirt, and if you're a AD or a designer. Same goes for sneakers.
