the overhead of running antivirus programs is almost not worth it.

AVG isn't a bad free anti-virus program, I used to use it.

ARe you still running a 486? windows 95?
simply put, i tested this VERY same thing, and i lost 10 3dmarks, 1Fps in a q3 timedemo, and nothing in BF2 ( most likly GPU limited )
as much as what you are saying was true back in the Day with... *cough*Norton*cough* it dosent really hold true these days.

Ami, I'm not interested enough to look much into it but the 7.1 free version seems to have a hold on my xp system ...a noticeable hold, specialy on bootup...yet it's possible it's something else doing this to me now you obligate me to figure out my issue :icon32:

Anyone who still subscribes to that line of thinking should do themselves a favour and read up on rootkits. Without real-time protection its tough to tell once a 'kit has been installed since it is masked from the file system and process list.

Well I should have probably said I have no need for real-time scanners then
I do a manual av scan about once a month, never catches anything. Scan for rooktkits once in a while, except for 1 or 2 false-positives it's clean. Spyware scans come up clean as well.
I'm just one of those people that dosen't like having any type of scanner running real-time, I'd rather do the scanning myself.

I'm not using any anti-virus protection either, as long don't act like a fucktard on the internet, you'll pretty much be fine.

Yeah, keep telling yourself that :icon27:. I've worked in this industry long enough to know how fast new viruses, malware, and propagation methods are released.
Dzjepp: You realize that the rootkit detection utilities are far from perfect right? Once one is installed theres a good chance those utilities still won't detect it. Mcaffee and Symantec corporate editions have better detection now but both of them still have a long ways to go so real-time protection is the best way to go to prevent a machine from being compromised in the first place. Consumer-level AV products that I've seen so far have minimal rootkit detection if any at all.

just keep thinking that if ur a noob
there are much more subtle ways to catch something than downloading and running something called song.mp3.exe
even if you only browse secure sites you should have antivirus protection

I have no use for antivirus software, or adware detection software... I've been doing fine for so long without them it's pointless to start.
It may be stupid, but under no circumstances does using the internet mean you're infected with anything.
However anyone using IE6 or lower is another story.

I use Norton Antivirus, never noticed any slowdowns because of it.
Well except that time I was playing F.E.A.R and my scheduled scan of the entire computer was running. It played fine, but the load times between the levels became really looooong. I do have a dual core A64 X2 4600+ and 2GB of RAM though which I guess helps.

Yes, that really is stupid. Ever hear of something called an exploit? Dipshits like you are the reason bot-nets exist.
