network cable unplugged when connected to router

Just bought a cheap network card for housemate since, for some reason, onboard nic's don't work well with our network config here.

Problem is, when connected through router, the light on NIC doesn't come on, and windows says network cable unplugged.

When connected directly into cable modem, no prob.

I tried changing the setting in the nic properties for media type from autosense to 100 full duplex etc, but no luck.

Any suggestions?

never mind, switching it to 100 base T full duplex fixed it! :)

(i had set it to 100 base TX full duplex before)

Good that you got it sorted, but if it's not working on Auto Sense that could be down to a crappy wire. Though Auto Sense is always a bit iffy on any network, I prefer to force cards/switches to a specified speed/duplex.
