Is there different grades to this stuff? If you look at Home Depot online you see cat5e "24/4 Pair Telephone Wire". Then I also see cat5e "24-4 Twisted Pair Gigabit Datacom Wire". What about these voice grade/data grade keystone modules?

I have a new house, and it has an On-Q Legrand wiring box. It has this combo module in the box for the telcom, and the data wires are just hanging for now. There are RJ-45 jacks all throughout the house, and 4-port 2X rj-45/2X F-connector where the entertainment centers go. They told me one was for data, and one was for phone. In the wiring enclosure it has all the wiring for the house, all rj-45. Now, all the blue cables have a "phone" tag on them...and they have gray cables with a "data" label on them. But if you read the writing on the wire it all says cat5e. Will I be able to put a gigabit switch in there and turn any port into a data outlet? Or is this blue stuff some cheap ass wire that is only good for voice?

i don't see why not. the colours are just so the pullers know what goes where.

It'll work, just be sure your shit is punched down fairly well to the distribution core and jacks. Those modular jack holes seem to work fairly well, too.

oh yeah, I picked up a small 8-port gigabit switch, mounted it in the enclosure and tested a few jacks. everything works great. :icon25:

we've got cat5e in the walls here and there's no fucking way i'm going to dig it all out and plaster over it again unless some really, incredibly nifty technology comes out that demands cat6/a.

btw - has anyone got a link to a good home networking site? never noticed any problems with our network, but then i haven't thought it since plumbing the thing in and having a linux chap try to hack it - maybe it's not as good as it could be anymore, added a lot of devices since then.

just had a look in the router cupboard and it's a godawful snare of wires and home to a few large and healthy spiders.

Actually over 10/100 it took 7+ minutes. Now it takes like 3 minutes or less.

I dont have cat6, I am running gigabit over cat5e. Are we talking about the same thing here?

hey speaking of which, where can i get some cheapo cat5? i need 3 pairs of 15-20 feet each. best buy and the likes sells cat6 for 30-40usd which is gay. are there mom and pop shops that would roll some cat5 for me cheaper that i should look for?

i dont know where you love Jepp, but all of my local comp shops would sell 20 foot patches for ~$10 Canadian..
