Quake 3 "Stuttering Issue"

Hi everyone.

I am a long term Quake 3 player, I mainly stick with Ra3 and Threewave and consider myself an intermediate level user of the program.

I have been having issues with Quake 3 ever since I installed an AMD X2 4800+ Let me explain what is happening......

When I start Q3 weather it is in the main Q3 menu, or threewave, I get a constant shuttering occurring every 5-7 seconds. This is most noticeable once I am online in game, my lagometer spikes consistently every 5-7 seconds making the game unplayable. This was never the case befor the X2 installation, and since thus time, I have reinstalled Windows clean, installed all of the AMD drivers and hotfixes to no avail. No matter what I get this stuttering, and it is consistent, not random. I play other games on this CPU, UT 2004, BF2, with no problems or lag at all.

Anyone have a clue as to what my problem is? :icon23:

TIA.

Here are my specs:

AMD X2 4800+
Geforce 8800 GTS
Soundblaster X-FI Platinum
Windows XP SP2
Plextor PX-716A
DFI NF4-SLI-D

Sounds like a connection problem? Or maybe a PB problem...
Do you still use the same config as before?

Maybe this will help Q3 connection tweaks

In the FAQ there is a question directly related to this: I get regular stuttering problems, what can I do?
The suggestion made here makes my system lag though, so I've got r_finish "0"

Firewall, virusscanner, wireless, PB, etc. What happens if you run with any or all disabled? Beware though, exposing an unprotected Windows(R) PC to the Internet might not be the smartest thing to do.

OK, I isolated the problem, it is punkbuster.

When I update PB using the pbweb tool and install the latest version from a clean install, the stuttering issue sets in. i verified this by removing punkbuster completely and the stuttering stopped.

Anyone have a clue here?

Set pb_sleep to 500 and check if it alleviates matters.

No, it makes it "a little" further apart in intervals.

Here is what I have submitted to Punkbuster online support.

I am not sure they will even respond?

Note #1

Hi Peeps,

Long time Quake 3 player here, I need a little help please. I have a new copy of Q3 I installed recently, it has the latest 1.32 patch included on the disc. I load everything up, configure my cfg, and there are no problems. I then use PBWEB to update punkbuster and once it is installed I load the game back up. This is where the problem begins, a stuttering happens (like lag) every 3-5 seconds, and it makes the game unplayable. This stuttering does not occur just while online mind you, it happens in the "main menus" of each mod or the baseq3 master menu. I have been trying to identify the issue for a month now, and this morning I did another clean install with the 1.32 patch....no problems. I used PBWEB to update the punk buster files and the stuttering began. I verified by deleting the punkbuster folder, and then the stuttering stops. Can you please help me I really want to play Quake 3 again?

Concerned,

C

Note #2

By the way my specs are:

Windows XP Pro SP2
Athalon 64 x2 4800+
Geforce 8800 GTS
Soundblaster X-FI
NO OVERCLOCKING

Note #3

You know the more I play with this more I am finding out.

When I set pb_sleep to "500" this lag issue decreases in frequency, but it still occurs enough to make the game unplayable?

Could this be a setting in my router that doesn't like the punkbuster commands?

Perhaps?

pb_system 1 if it isn't already. I also like to update pb with pbsetup before I join a game. http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php

are you sure it's pb? are you using r_smp 1? q3 and some X2's don't get along.

rule out r_smp 1 and X2 core issue first. i had massive stuttering when i first upgraded to an X2 cire.

put that in same dir as q3 exe and add it to your startup shortcut. you should get a com console starting before q3 starts. all it does is set affinity to 1 core. my shorcut looks like this:

"D:\Quake 3\nosmp.exe" "D:\quake 3\quake3.exe" +set fs_game cpma +nologo
