Before you post:
1) Check sticky threads, commonly asked questions and resources are available. For example:
http://quake3world.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 9add4bb94c
2) Use the search function. This forum has a search function. If you don't find your answer here, try using Google.
3) And if you still can't find the answer to your questions... THEN post a topic.
Edit: Welcome to Quake3World LEM, BTW :P

You need some sort of Radiant program, get it by going to
http://www.qeradiant.com. Also, you can go to the main
http://www.planetquake.com/bubba/mapping to get the program and some other programs and files you need to make your own maps (namely arenamaster for making .arena files, pakscape for making the pk3 files, and q3build for making the .aas files).

here.go to GtkRadiant, then GtkRadiant-1 4, choose your OS, then choose the top one.
Your not going to want to use Radian't compiler for many reasons, so use ydnar's q3map2 compiler
here.
To make q3map2 usable you must download the front end compiler so you will have a graphical interface to work with,
here.
i would like to thank bork[e] as he was the one who helped me get started.
I will post some tutorials here aswell if you require them, gl with mapping!

@FrEaK44
Some peole complain about a starter asking questions before searching, others complain about not asking questions before doing oneself.

Is good to see people wanting to start making maps for the Q3 engine still.
This may seem harsh to the new people here. But as obsidian said, looking in the sticky thread entitled "Starting Q3A Mapping- Link Resources", which really does say it all because of the name, would have merited alot of info. Us old timers here don't mind helping out and you'll find we actually do help. Just when it comes to simple things, like starting to map, it is really easy to just look around for a second first. LEM has alot of good people with alot of information, just try finding the info or stuff you need first before asking because like mentioned earlier, it can be had in sticky threads, most of the time.
There will come a time when you run across a problem that you can't find in sticky threads or even from googling. In those cases, you could search the forum here and get into the archives which have alot of great info on just about any problem you could run into while editing a map.
If after searching first and you don't find, then come ask us here. It isn't that we don't want to help you right at the beginning, it is more a thing that if one can't do for themselves first, then how can one expect others to do it for them.
Btw, all the new people here, welcome to LEM.

Yup, I certainly never meant to be rude or unhelpful. I pointed out the exact link to the Getting Started sticky thread since it's probably the best piece of advice anyone can give. It holds pretty much all the information and links that we've accumulated over the last 4/5 years of Q3 editing.
I've never been opposed to helping people.

Very true! But then again as long and often as it has been happening I kind of think of noobs being told to check the sticky's and google before posting as an initiation or rite of passage to LEM...lol.
Maybe we should rename the sticky's to
ALL NOOBS MUST READ HERE BEFORE POSTING ANYTHING!
Anyway, this may be redundant by now, but here is a list of good tools and free tools for customizeing Q3A in general.

Oh I know, I just figured I would take the opportunity to mention it as well. I know you mean well obsidian, and I know you help when possible.
