Home rackmounting?

Wonder if anyone will come up with a smaller rackmount standard anytime soon? 3com and dlink both have a hacked together kind of proprietary stacking system going on, but that's nothing compared to the potential of, say, a 12" standard-width cabinet specification.
Also, anyone know if electricians nowadays are savvy with wiring in ethernet when you get a house re-wired? Wireless is great and all, but there's still a lot to be said for patch panels available throughout, and I think there always will be since wired tech is probably going to continue to be a few steps ahead of wireless.
I'm not considering this for my current place (renting ATM, and it's a dive), but it's something to consider for when I finally jump on the mortgage bandwagon and get my own place.
I might still build a rackmount setup for a download/media server and some hifi kit, though.
