DVD burner problems

Ok, my old (AOpen) dvd burner was starting to act funny. It was burning VERRRY slowly, usually aborting with errors. It would also have problems when ripping images, although neither would happen consistently. So, I bought a Sony burner, installed it and the version of Nero that was packaged with it. Now it won't recognize my Verbatim DVD-Rs at all. I went and bought a pack of Sony DVDs to test, but like a dumbass, I got +Rs and this one needs -Rs.
Any suggestions? Other than trying the Sony -Rs which I'll do tomorrow.

The Sony media has always worked great for me. But I'd never buy a Sony drive. The reason. Sony is on the cutting edge of copyright protection and they region code their DVD drives. I'd trade that drive in for something else. I've got a Pioneer drive and it works awesome. There isn't anything I can't burn or burn to. Lite-On also makes a great drive that will do it all.
