The “media-centric” PlayStation 3 will feature capabilities of consumer electronics devices and will be more focused on digital media content playback, rather than on gaming. Based on claims reportedly made by executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., PC Watch web-site reports that the PlayStation 3 “media-centric”-edition will feature anti-vibration mechanism on the Blu-ray disc drive, 512MB XDR memory, more advanced power supply unit and two HDMI connectors to divide audio and video data. $1680 to $2520
isn't the point of a HDMI cable is to have audio and video in one?

The normal PS3 contains 256 MiB GDDR3 VRAM clocked at 700 MHz and 256 MiB of Rambus XDR DRAM, for those requiring an immediate comparison.

Wasn't the PSX a huge, well, for lack of a better word... FLOP? I think the only thing it had going for it was the looks, which for its time kicked all other console design ass.
Why are they trying to repeat the same mistakes?
Maybe they should get the PS3 back on top like the PS2 was and make Sony a name to be trusted again before they dilute and mess up the market even more...

actually it is... and i think thats funny.
sony repeating the betamax mistake of making the players too expensive perhaps?

except when dvd players first came out, they were $1k.
hd-dvd stand alone players are what, $500ish? i'm not seeing how it's funny is all.

no one's hd-dvd or blue ray player also is a game console... but still more expensive.
seems silly.

Sooooo... why is the PS3 CHEAPER than a stand alone player, even though it has all that expensive shiznit inside? I dont understand...? Is it because Sony can lose a bit of money on the PS3...?
Why bother with stand alone players at all...?

doesn't the price of an premium 360 + hd dvd just about equal the price of the premium PS3 at around $600 US?

exactly. IF you were in the market for a blue-ray player, how is the PS3 NOT a good deal?

If you read the article, you'd see that they are, the 3rd version will be sold for profit not at a loss, cause it won't have losses made up for by selling games, cause it won't be aimed at the games market.
Given that in the consumer electronics industry manufacturers do not subsidize hardware in hope to compensate their losses by selling many games, it is highly likely that the console, which currently costs $840 to manufacture, will be sold at a premium price. The Japanese web-site noted an executive at SCEI as saying that the price range could be from ¥200 to ¥300 thousand ($1680 to $2520).

The real cost is getting an HDTV or monitor.

actually, if you need one and don't expect a 60" screen, then you can get one for about that price too.

couldn't you just buy a 19" LCD and hook it to your console?

by +JuggerNaut+
sure could.

so, $200 monitor + $600 console = $800
i suppose the real question is, how is that better than a $1000 computer?
as the price point keeps going up and the line between pc and console gets fuzzier; i'm thinking i won't be making any new console purchase until GT5 comes out and i'm forced to get a ps3.

that's a whole different argument that someone else can take you up on.
i'm not so sure you can get much of a pc with what's left over from that 1k after you buy a blu-ray or hd-dvd drive, but i've not cared to look.

The 42" LCD HDTVs I priced this weekend were a lot more expensive than $600 - $800. Are you talking about good tv's?
