I pick it up today, will get:
firefox 2, need something for ftp, for torrents, music, movies/vids what software should I get - first ever xp pc

filezilla (ftp)
utorrent
foobar/winamp/etc. (music)
k-lite codecs (movies/vids)
7-zip (for compressed files)

i'd assume it came with some sort of anti-virus, but you might go with windows defender also to help combat spyware.

OpenOffice if you don't have any other office suite installed.

why would you use a bloated piece of junk like powerdvd if you already have vlc?

true true but VLC does sound as good N:)R has the options for sound i can get with a stand alone dvd player

Thunderbird if you need an email client.
AVG Free if you don't have an antivirus.
EAC and LAME for MP3 encoding. I also use MP3Tag and MP3Gain for tagging and volume leveling.
GIMP if you need a photo editing software.

i can customize my surround sound system better with a stand alone dvd player then vlc .. i use vlc for avi's xvid's bin/cue files but for that high quality sound i go with a dvd player which cost me $0 to get

Good, except for the registry cleaner. Let Windows manage its own registry. It doesnt need help from a third party program.

The test here for me is the fact that immediately following a clean install [nothing installed except windows] all registry cleaners [all that I have tested] will find 80-300 errors that need fixing. Bullshit.

If these programs were any good, they would show zero problems at this stage.

run xp for a week and you will find apps installed that have snuck in.these programs are not found in the control panels add/remove program app.
you will soon find apps that are in startup you do not want like quicktime and more.
jv16powertools http://www.jv16.org is a valuable program to remove these items.
it's way more then a registry cleaner,i haven't needed to re-install xp or format my drive since day one perhaps 3 years or more.
i have fixed many peoples computers with this app

What about anti virus and trojan detection etc? ONe listed above but is that enough?

edit jv6 is trial only, is there another program taht wont time out in 30 days?

use AVG. i've been using it for hm....almost 5 years? yep.

Comodo firewall --seems to work

the old regsupreme or the pro version from the makers of jv16powertools can be found for free and have all the tools i need.

There is also a free version of Avast, but I prefer AVG.

Browse thru the PortableApps website. lots of good programs which require no install = no registry bloat.

which is no longer free, but you can go to oldversion.com and find the last free version. 9.xx, i believe.

thanks heaps, been good so far, the things i miss are a really good dock or similar, and ability to monitor temps, any suggestions for those? Or can I stick app icons in the blue bar across the bottom of the screen?

i use blackbox which has a nice minimal dock you can place where ever you want. also, they do have a plug in or two for system stats, but i'll have to search for that when i get home
