Went to bed last night fine. Woke up with a new little icon beside my clock. So I bring up my task manager to see what's going on, only to be greeted with 47 proccesses. :icon19:
Maxthon has 2 new toolbars and b/c I had class this morning I did a fast High Jack This scan just to get a quick idea of what's going on................................

Anyway, just wondering wth caused this? And any suggestions to keep it from happening... :icon26:
On WindowsXP SP2 with the firewall turned on, I did not have MS Beta program "real-time protection" turned on and also BitDefender was turned off (What I use for a AV).
Currently scanning with BitDfefender...but DAMN. :icon19:
edit: Hasn't been a problem to remove anything yet, just wondering what caused it...never seen something like this to the extreme it was.

I'm guessing I had something that piggy backed its way in during a CS game last night. Only thing I can think of...looks like its all sorted out now.
Any recomindations on some free firewalls though? Or is the one that comes with SP2 good enough?

I used zonealarm since the the install and never had any problem with malicious software getting on my comp other than me willingly letting it.

I also have another question...the one thing I know least about as far as security goes is firewalls, and obviously I need to brighten up on this.
Before going to work today I was playing around with windows firewall...I set everything to the default level and just "started over". I went to play a game of Quake and did not unblock it through the firewall, and it still worked...Same for CS 1.6 and Warez.
I thought if you didn't unblock it, it would not work? Even though something is blocked, that something can still access, and be accessed by something in the real world?

No idea about that, tbh i don't even have sp 1 or 2 installed let alone the windows firewall but since zonealarm does a nice job i'm not complaining.

Quite agreed.
The SP2 firewall is surprisingly good.

Except that, if you look a few posts up, it lets programs through even unless you tell it to block. I've had that happen before as well, so it would appear that the default action is allow.

Actually no, i tend to install and uninstall games but they don't get removed from the zonealarm list. Maybe I should clean it up :icon32:

Besides only 33 programs in that list are allowed to acces internet. The remaining 51 are blocked.

Yes, it only offers to block if the program is trying to open a listening port. It is, however, more than sufficient for most users. If antispyware apps and antivirus scans are regularly run then outbound protection isn't usually necessary.

Someone care to tell me what this I/O error is talking about. I've been seing it for awhile now and just thought I should check on it.
Also, after I got all this working I unchecked everything in my firewall. Whenever I bring up a app the firewall never ask me to unblock it or anything...is this normal...or how should I be using the Xp Firewall??

My work blocked the google desktop app, which meant I had to uninstall it to get google.com to work. Apparently google desktop does a little phoning home when you do a local search. I'm now using yahoo desktop search instead.

There's so many search engines. What made them block you?
