Microsoft antispyware beta is better than Spybot and Ad-Aware. IMHO.
It picked up every real threat and deleted and quarantined them with no fuss. Spybot only picked up 2 or 3 things which Microsoft still picked up afterwards even though Spybot had supposedly removed them. Ad-Aware seems to be good for some things, mostly trackers and data miners, but even when it had supposedly removed some trojans, again, Microsoft did the job properly. Microsoft antispyware is fast too.
What do you guys think? Unfortunately, the Microsoft free trial expires on july 31st.

MS said they won't charge for the final version.

Well most likely the things that MS is picking up from SpyBot is the files that SpyBot keeps in case you delete the wrong thing. I've used the MS Antispyware and it is very good, but don't ditch the other two, use all three.
Now the free trial, is that for the software or are they going to have subscription fees?

I'll be happy if that's the case.

it will be free.
as for it being *cough* better than the others, well, i haven't run any spyware tool in about three weeks. decided to try the beta last night and it found absolutely nothing. i didn't have time before work to run Adaware, but i've not used the pc since the beta scan and it's currently not online. i'll be scanning with Adaware when i get home this evening.

it misses shit tons of things.. and finds NOTHING after i run adaware and spybot..
Thus my conclusion.. while "good" for the average moron, its not great..

yeah, that's pretty much what i figured it was going to do. but it is quite easy for anyone to "setup" and having real-time protection is nice, even though it's a process pig.
you're right though, not really for me, just figured i'd give it a shot so i can toss in my .02 when the subject comes up.

I stand by my statement of MS Antispyware, SpyBot S&D, and Ad-Aware when used together will do the most good.
I do like the real time protection it says what system settings are being altered and will ask you to allow it or not, but not as annoying as Zone Alarm is for internet access.
I just like the fact that MS is doing something to combat spyware.
So I do like it, I will see how it stands up against some people who get more crap then a septic tank, newbies, that will be the test of it. Especially since, in spite of the fact that I tell them to, they don't run Ad-Aware or SpyBpt S&D

yar, i know that, i just don't use spybot as adaware takes care of me so i see no reason for
me to have real-time protection. between FF and Adaware, i don't have spyware issues.

Oh yeah, there's no way I'd rely on only one program. I'll always use all of those 3 together.
Ah yes, and my pc-cillin 2002 expired, so I've now upgraded to pc cillin internet security 2005.
It was very... inexpensive..

FYI, adaware is great, but it misses things Spybot finds..
ive found, those 2 together, are better than any other combo..

i'm really wondering why everyone seems to need to do that.

i used to use both spybot and adaware, but to me it was more of a difference of WHEN you scanned and when they updated each of their reference files. so of course, one will find stuff the other doesn't, but within a day or so i would imagine the other would have the same files.

Because not one of them seems to do everything. Some are h'or doevres, some are main meals, and some are dessert. Together though they make the complete meal.

Yeah-
There is thrid one my brother uses at the collge that is similer to spybot, it has immunization and such.
It does pretty well. :icon14:
SpywareBlaster I think.
Whenever he gets a student's computer to 'repair' it's usualy just a matter of spyware. The last one he did was so loaded a format HAD to be done.
Once set up and finished, he installed all three programs and immunized with SpyBot and Blaster. ...Add to that a mini lecture to the student. :icon32:
That same computer that was once a breeding ground for spyware is like a fort now. :icon14:

Well the way I think of it, every program has exploits, weak spots, holes ect ect and every program has strong points and good defences, so when using 2-3 programs hopefully the weak spots and expoints will become much smaller and coverage will become greater

i agree with some of what your'e saying, but like i said, my surfing habits and my browser help me from needing any more than one spyware app. i just don't have a need.
now, your avg user definitely would benefit from both - possibly all three. not saying you guys are avg, but you're just covering your *sses using all three or two. my setup has served me well for almost two years and i've not had any spyware problems.

I've run all 3 on both my work comp and home comp and never found anything more than a couple tracking cookies. You people are all Internet noobs.
I'm w/ Juggy. FF + AdAware is all I need.

Hell I use IE6, every Windows and profram up to date, and I have no issues, I run Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D.
Perfect example of why updating is important was the virus that executed an RPC Procedure and shutdown the machine and MS had a patch for it a few months before it hit, but still highh infection.
I also sit behind Windows Firewall and the firewall in my router
