Random Audio Question

I just installed quake on my mac. It's running good, but the voice that says "Quad Damage, 8 Frags Left, Excellent" and other sound effects are very high pitch and very fast. Most of the sound is on hyper speed. Anyone have an idea as to why this is happening. The things that make you go hmmm.
