haven't tried to run it in a while, but q4 crashed at startup until i reinstalled openal.

is this a problem other folks have seen or did i just screw my machine up at some point?

Whats wrong with the version that comes with audigy drivers.

Nothing is wrong, it's something else that you need + youre own driver.
