New Computer Advice

I'm helping my parents get a new computer. They don't game and in fact don't do much to tax their present computer at all. They want to go low budget.

My question is, how good are the celeron's nowadays? I'm looking at a system with a celeron d 336 2.8 ghz, considering that versus a p4 3.0 ghz chip which would be about $90 more in total. Both system's come with half a gig of ram. Should I go celeron? Will it last them for the next 5 years of internet browsing, sending digital photos through email etc. Should I up the ram to 1 gig?

Thanks for any opinions.

i'd save the $90 and go with more ram.

I agree with Juggernaut, definately go for the gig of RAM. With Vista coming out the gig will make it last longer then a laster processor.

Vista isn't going to factor into this given what puff's said about them going low budget and lasting 5 years.

Unless something bizarre happens that cripples XP.

For what they're going to be doing, XP.

I would agree, for their purpose XP is the better choice right now. My opinion still stands, however, I would go for the extra RAM.
