I need to know the best way to save Outlook files. Is exporting them the best way?

From which version to which version? If the version is the same exporting is best. I encountered some trouble last time i did it between express and 2003 though.

I just copy the .pst file.
I've had problems with importing and exporting.

importing and exporting with a pst should be fine. just make sure that you read all the import/export options carefully.
or what fragageddon said - maybe import the copied pst if you're changing versions.

One thing that confuses me is that if you go...user name, docs and settings, application data, Microsoft, Outlook, there is an Outlook.pst.
If yoiu go username, docs and settings, local settings, application data, Microsoft, Outlook, there is an OUtlook.pst and an Archive.pst
These 2 different Outlook.pst files are greatly different in size.
Which one is the correct one to save.

The Local settings one, usually.
Save them both just in case.
Your biggest clue will be in the 'Modified' date on the files.

Just open Outlook and goto tools/options.
Then click the mail setup tab, then click on data files.
Now click open folder and that's the one you need to copy.

I've just moved my .PST file to my D drive. So I don't even have to think about backing it up.

Export the info to PST. As long as its not over 500MB you should be fine. The exception to this is if you're using the newer PST file type in which case you don't need to worry about file size.
