Doesn't seem to be the case any longer:

One guy was denied because:
he was told he was "a person who was inadmissible to Canada.'' The problem? A conviction for marijuana possession.
In 1975.
Sets a scary precedent that not only are they keeping people out for minor stuff, but there is no recourse or reasonableness to the decision making process.

i think we should cut the americans some slack. considering they finally agreed to a tiny change in their passport rules.
Chertoff said the exemption is designed make it easier for sports teams, youth groups and school groups to travel across the border for tournaments and events.
both countries border towns have been going back and forth for kids sports since forever. the war on terror had thrown a big fuck into all that.

yeah, any sort of DUI or DWI will net you a ban from canada as well.
supposedly after 10 years you can file some paperwork, pay a fee and get back in. one of the local radio guys had to jump through mad hoops to make it happen. (DWAI in the states)
and the passport requirement doesn't start until '08
